.....The cartographer transfers a three-dimensional image of the surface of the planet Earth (and other objects of the Solar System) onto a plane. The artist does the same thing - he transfers three-dimensional objects from the real or fictional world onto a plane. At the same time, cartographic works are protected by copyright along with works of painting, sculpture, graphics and design. Therefore, during the training, attention was equally paid to both exact sciences, such as mathematical cartography, physics, geodesy, optics (the nature of light and color), etc., and sciences responsible for the artistic value of a cartographic work. Drawing, painting and composition, design and coloristics, methods of shadow plastic image, art history, etc. were studied.
When creating cartographic works, transparent paints such as watercolor and colored ink are mainly used (although there are also samples made with oil paints or mosaics). A limited set of colors is used to create a harmonious image. The desired color in the work is achieved not by mechanically mixing different paints, but by applying the method of lessening - that is, sequentially applying one transparent paint to another. Now, as a painter, Elena uses this deep experience of working with color, structure and space, knowledge in the field of optical color mixing. At the same time, oil paints became the main material of the work, due to which certain optical effects are achieved.
Many years of experience in cartography and the design of geographical maps have taught Elena to see the structure, analyze the physical space and accurately fix its coordinates. Each line on the map was the result of a calculation, each color zone was a logical categorization. Now, when working with painting, the rigid logic of lines and patterns inherited from cartography can be disrupted, softened, or transformed by the dynamic, fluid language of paint. The paintings become peculiar emotional landscapes, offering the viewer not just to look at the place, but to feel it. It is a perfect synthesis: precision, which gives form, and painting, which breathes life and feeling into this form.
